Our Smart Digital Lab has a new visiting scholar from Germany! Julia Specht is a master’s student from OTH Regensburg, supervised by Prof Thomas Linner. She has extensive experience in drone mapping.
We are thrilled to share the good news that Cheng Zhang has successfully passed his oral examination and received his PhD title today on 30 October 2024! His thesis, titled “Building Information Modelling-based Smart Inspection Data Management for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-enabled Visual Building Inspection” represents a significant achievement and a valuable contribution to the field of construction automation.
“In October 2024, Yang had the opportunity to visit several leading universities in China, including Chongqing University, Xihua University, Sichuan University, Central South University, and Hunan University. During these visits, he toured their labs and explored the latest research developments in civil and construction engineering.
On 24 October 2024, we were delighted to welcome Professor Shang-Hsien (Patrick) Hsieh (謝尚賢) from National Taiwan University (NTU) to our Smart Digital Lab at the University of Auckland. His seminar, Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Smart Built Environment, was both insightful and engaging.
Tianlong Zhang is a PhD student from Southwest Jiaotong University, focusing on railway alignment optimization using AI. He joined Yang’s group as a visiting PhD scholar funded by China Scholarshiop Council (CSC) in October 2023 for a one-year stay.

On 30 August 2024, Associate Professor Yang Miang Goh from National University of Singapore (NUS), visited our Smart Digital Lab at University of Auckland. His seminar on safety analytics was truly interesting and insightful.
On 22 August 2024, Li XU, a first-year PhD student, successfully passed his provisional year review! He is now confirmed to proceed to the next stage of his PhD research. Congratulations, Li!
We are thrilled to share the good news that Feng Wang has successfully defended his PhD thesis today. Feng began his PhD in late 2019 and received his PhD title today on 20 August 2024!
